History of Hoksbergen Hay The business was formed in 1948 by Lewis and Bertha Hoksbergen of Lynden, Washington. Lewis began hauling hay out of Ellensburg, WA with a 1948 2-ton Studebaker. At that time he could haul only 8 tons of alfalfa, and it took him 20 hours to make a trip. Later he bought a single axle trailer to pull behind. In the early 50's he also began hauling out of Yakima, and also from the Quincy area as that farmland was being developed. Their four boys, Robert (Curly), John, Lewis Jr., and George, have all been co-owners of the business at one time. In 1964 they purchased their first diesel truck, a used Kenworth. Then in 65' they bought their first brand new Kenworth (Check out the picture page below). This also was the time period when they went from a tractor-trailer setup to a tractor pulling two A-train trailers. In the early 80's John sold out and formed Cascade Commodities. Later George also sold out in the late 80's and went into real estate. The company progressed during the 90's under Curly and Lewis Jr. Then in the beginning of 1999 John and his wife Betty bought out Curly and Lewis Jr. The company has been in the family for over 50 years, and is presently owned and operated by John and Betty Hoksbergen, and member of their family- Mike and Julie Decker, and Robert and Jennifer Hoksbergen. Currently we have ten yellow Kenworths, and a variety of styles of trailers capable of hauling all types of agricultural commodities. Today we can haul about 32 tons of alfalfa, and we can make the trip to Ellensburg and back in about 10-11 hours. What a difference from when Lewis Sr. began!!!
